Jill Bates Pastels
About my medium...
Pastel on Sanded paper
Chalk pastel is the closest an artist
can get to using pure dry pigment.
Made from pastes containing dry
pigment, water and a binder, pastels
are rolled into cylindrical sticks and
dried. Pastel markings are made up of
fine particles of color which rest
casually on each other, reflecting light
from many angles. This gives pastel
paintings an airiness and surface light
not duplicated in other media.
